She Gone.

Let there be light!  The wall has come down and the place already feels 100 times better. This is the first (iphone) photo I took after the demo.

And it’s getting brighter.

I’m giddy to have a new kitchen and a place to sit down to dinner. I promised myself that I’d wait until everything goes in to make a decision on the table. But who says I can’t have a little photoshop fun until then?

I’ve been “trying out” table options this week. So far, I like this mix the best. The chairs keep things casual,  the chandelier adds texture, and the bar cart adds sparkle. Of course, I sprinkled in some navy too.

This is Happening: A Darrough Kitchen Renovation

Yes. I know. I haven’t blogged since December. Let me just say it has been a very blessed 2013. The Darrough kitchen renovation has begun as of last week. Since the Poplin & Queen website isn’t up yet, I thought I would post an obligatory before shot and the plans for after. Sound good? I thought so, too.

However, you should know, I will be posting the specific details and the after shots on the P&Q blog once it’s live.

Brace yourself. It’s a sight.

Here we go …

The wall between the dining and kitchen is coming down to create a more open feel.

And this will be the new view: I collaborated with the lovely Lauren Morris of Markraft Cabinets  to come up with a whole new design. It’s going to be crisp, clean, and bright — just the way I love everything.

I’ve shared  my inspiration for the new space on the Poplin & Queen Houzz profile … here.

Wow, it feels great to be blogging again. I can’t wait to share the end result with y’all!

xoxo,

Shannon

Merry Merry

Good morning! My apologies for the limited December posts. The combination of  work, holiday prep, and weekend jaunts to NYC and Texas have me strapped for free time.  Plus, I have been busy getting things together for the Poplin & Queen website. Hanna over at Gadabout is a dream to work with. We should be launching our new website in the new year.

On another note, Poplin & Queen decorated a door for the latest issue of Wrightsville Beach Magazine. You can find it around town or online here.

Oh, yes and the very reason for this post! Have a very Merry Christmas form me (and these yellow pups, too)!

Give Thanks + Poplin & Queen Updates.

I’m in a bit of a tizzy today … there’s a bourbon pecan pie to be made, and I haven’t even thought of starting. Thank goodness Garden & Gun has a fail-proof recipe.

Yesterday the latest issue of Focus on the Coast hit stands with a tablescape set by Poplin & Queen. I don’t have all the official shots, but I will get them up here as soon as I can. Honestly, I couldn’t wait any longer to post something. This is my first time being published as an interior designer and not a journalist. It’s quite different in my book.

Until I get all the pictures up and ready to pin … let’s all take a moment to remember what today and tomorrow are all about – THANK YOUS! Have a happy thanksgiving full of friends, food, and family!

xoxo,

Shannon Darrough

A Very Merry Gift Guide – For the Ladies

This one took me awhile, but here’s my gift guide for the girls. Some gifts are small, some are big, but whoever you’re giving to, I have a feeling you’ll know the second you see the right present. I tried to think of my friends when I made this guide … What would they want?  What do they like?  What qualities do I admire in them? As you can see, I added my own labels, and I’m hoping that when they read this they will know exactly who I’m talking about. ‘Tis the season, y’all.

A Very Merry Gift Guide: For the Men

It’s that time of year again … I’m working away on my gift guides! I wouldn’t say gift giving is my love language (you should probably read that book if you haven’t), but I sure do love to buy presents for the people I love. I get so excited when I see something that is just perfect for someone I know!

Up first? My guide to giving gifts to the men in our lives. My only bit of advice – pick items that are practical and timeless!

What else do you suggest for great gifts for guys?

The Big Book of Chic (!)

I will never forget my former editor introducing me to the world of Assouline publishing. Perhaps I should write him a thank you note for the introduction … I’ve been an avid collector ever since.

Now, the esteemed publishing house has paired with brilliant interior designer Miles Redd to give us The Big Book of Chic. I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy. Here’s a preview of the sure-to-inspire tome.

I hope some of my favorite of Redd’s spaces are in there as well …

Who else is ordering a copy?

The Art of the Tart(an)

The traditional approach to tartan has been “go big or go home” … I love it, but not everyone lives in a home fit for a dramatic plaid room.

Again very dramatic …

Adding a few tartan touches is the perfect way to update for the season.

I pull out this throw every year around this time, and instantly the living room feels cozier. This a shot from my engagement photos and not my living room, but I think the point is made with the next photo.

The same can be said when it comes to winter wardrobes. Tartan accents keep things fresh and unfussy.

J.Crew‘s latest lookbook is full of ways to accessorize with tartan. I can’t decide what to get first, but it may have to be the flats. They’re just to cute to pass up!

Catching Up

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend. I know I needed it. I’ve had a cold that I can’t seem to shake. Feels very funny to say, but I’m taking a “sick day” today, which really translates to research, thank you notes, and emailing.

I’ve been working on multiple photo shoots over the past two weeks …

Two for Christmas … Isn’t Laney the prettiest golden you’ve ever seen? Everyone was amazed at how at home she was in front of the camera. Sawyer Darrough would never sit still to have a bow put on him.

… And one of the adorable coastal kitchen we worked on. The honeycomb tiles really add the perfect pop of color.

Poplin & Queen hosted a Pure Barre class over the weekend, too. It was so much fun! I only hope that all the women who came aren’t cursing us because they’re still sore today.

I know this week is another busy one for everyone, especially as we inch closer to the official holiday season. It can be hard to stop and enjoy the moment when we’re furiously trying to get things done. Instead of taking on more and more things … I think it’s time I let go of these ten things.  I already feel less stressed just reading them.
